History

The Como Restaurant is located on the ground floor of one of the most famous and historically rich buildings in Prague, the Hotel Jalta. Today, the hotel is one of the most attractive and popular boutique hotels in the centre of Prague, and the COMO Restaurant makes a perfect accompaniment. But this hasn’t always been the case; read on to find out a little bit more about this fascinating building and its history:

1945
By mistake, a Soviet Army tank blasted away the original building during the May Revolution.

1952
The Czechoslovak socialist government decided to build a ‘luxurious’ hotel on the site of the original building.

1954
Construction of the Hotel Jalta began.  First to be completed was a nuclear shelter, a secret hospital and a reservoir with drinking water.

1958
The opening ceremony for the hotel was held on 31 May for the Communist elite, and on 1 June the hotel was opened for the public.

1987
The socialist enterprise known as “Restaurants and Diners” reconstructed the hotel.

1991
The Hotel Jalta was pronounced as a national cultural monument.

1992
The Hotel Jalta was purchased by Japanese investors - Nomura Bank and Miki Travel.

1996
The Japanese investors complete the 7th floor, giving the hotel 94 rooms in total (the same number as at present).

2003
On 20 June, the hotel was purchased and taken over by Flow East, Hotel Jalta’s parent company and a complete reconstruction of the hotel and its restaurant started soon after.

2004
The hotel’s restaurant, then known as Hot, was opened and it soon became known for its fusion cuisine (a combination of Asian and European styles).

2009
In March, 2009, COMO Restaurant & Café took the place of Hot, offering guests a Tapas bar, Mediterranean specialties, live music, free Wi-Fi and a wonderful front terrace.
